Private, Co. K, 8th
Georgia Volunteer Infantry
Born on January 28, 1843. Berry's Confederate service record summary simply indicates that he enlisted on May 15, 1861, and surrendered at Appomattox, Va. April 9, 1865. Evidently, he remained a private the entire War. Mary Ann Jenkins writes that "either he kept getting busted back in rank or had the wisdom to know that it is not a good idea to seek promotion in a day and age when leaders were expected to lead from the front, not direct from the rear." He married Zora Landrum Armistead Berry. Her father was William Landrum, and is probably the "W. M. Landrum" also in Company K of the 8th Georgia Regiment. W. M. Landrum's Confederate service record summary states: "Landrum, W. M. (or M. M.)----- private May 15, 1861. Discharged, disability, July 2, 1861."
Frederick T. Berry died on March 25, 1925, and is buried in the cemetery of the Methodist Church in Center, Jackson County, Georgia. His tombstone reflects his regiment and company.
