Services for Robert Wesley Ferguson, 87, of Haughton, Louisiana, will be held on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel with Pastor Gevan Spinney officiating. Interment will follow in Hill Crest Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors from 2:00 p.m. until service time on Friday, April 19, 2013.
Robert was born September 16, 1925 in Ringgold, Louisiana and passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, April 16, 2013.
Robert loved his country and answered the call of duty during WW II fighting in Germany. Robert was trained as a Field Lineman, but when he found out that he would be entering the towns liberated after the fighting, he told his commander he would rather fight. They allowed him to give up the job he was trained for and put him with the infantry where he was private first class in the 3rd Battalion and 232nd Infantry. He served honorably until discharged from the Army in 1946.
After his service in the Army in World War II, he lived in Cotton Valley with his grandmother, Delphine Ferguson. While living there, he hitch-hiked on weekends back and forth from Cotton Valley to Springhill, LA. Some friends of Ann Lewis (his soon-to-be-bride) told her about him. Ann and her friends loaded up into Ann's parents car and went and found him to give him a ride. Ann and Robert had an immediate attraction to each other and the rest is history. They were married at Easter in 1949 and lived in Taylor, AR with Ann's parents (Iva and Johnny Lewis) while building their own home, which they made from bricks that they hand-made. After living in Taylor until 1967, they moved to Haughton, LA and lived in Merrywoods subdivision. They lived in Merrywoods until 1977, at which time they purchased land on Hwy. 157 and built their home there. Robert and Ann cleared the land themselves and Robert electrically wired the house from reading a book. During their time in Taylor, AR and Haughton, LA, they had three children, Judy, Richard and Janet.
Upon his return home from the war Robert started in the sheet metal trade with the sheet metal union local 137. Before retiring from sheet metal work, he started working part time for Hill Crest Funeral Home with his wife. He was so committed to Hill Crest that he even put off traveling when he retired from his full time job.
He was a Deacon at First Baptist Church Haughton. He loved his church and church family as much as he loved his family. He will be missed by all that knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Orie Ferguson and Gladys Adcock Ferguson; his loving wife Martha Ann Ferguson; brother, George Ferguson; and grandmother, Delphine Ferguson. He is survived by his loving daughter, Judy Jergins and husband Richard; his son, Richard Ferguson; daughter, Janet Ferguson; grandchildren, Ricki, Robby and Rachael Ferguson and Daniel Jergins; great-grandchildren, Carson Ferguson and Ryanne Archibeque; and sister, Barbara Caughran.
