Tragedy struck Chanute High School Thursday when Carlie Almond, a sophomore, suddenly passed away at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center.
Her mother, Amy Almond, said that Carlie had not been feeling well for several days and had been diagnosed with bronchitis and given medication.
However, she said that Carlie's symptoms had not improved.
On Thursday, Carlie went to basketball practice but was feeling so poorly that a teammate took her home, and then to the emergency room.
"They did everything they could," Amy said, "but they couldn't save her."
Amy said the doctors suspect a blood clot had moved from her leg into her lungs, resulting in a pulmonary embolism.
