Nicholas moved with his parents to Northumberland County, Pennsylvania where he married his first wife, Mary Elder. Nicholas remarried the widow Mary Eldridge-Davis in 1843. Nicholas sold the farm in Jackson County, Ohio and moved with his second wife Mary, several of her children, and his own children, to Cedar County, Missouri.

In 1850 Nicholas again moved, this time to Mills County, Iowa. About 1855 Mary died and was buried near the old Linville farm. Nicholas marries for the third time in 1856 to Matilda Hanks-Utterback. Matilda and Nicholas both died in 1863. Nicholas was laid to rest next to his second wife Mary Eldridge-Davis near the old Linville farm.
