Matilda Jane Smith, daughter of Moses and Rachel (Ratcliff) Smith, was born January 15, 1856, in Adams County, Iowa. She married Charles Wesley Benight on November, 21, 1872. They lived on her parents farm in Adams County. In 1906, they moved to a farm near Hastings, Nebraska. In August, 1911, they purchased a farm near Golden City, Missouri. C.W. passed away in October before they could move there. Matilda moved to the farm and lived there for a few years, selling the farm in 1918. She returned to Nebraska to live near her daughter, Charity. Matilda died on May 26, 1950, in Hansen, Nebraska.

C.W. and Matilda had four daughters: Bessie May [Harned], Julia Wood [Richey], Allela Asenith [Richey] [Elliott] and Charity W. [Giles].
