Son of John & Rebecca (Van Meter) Heberling, 2nd? husband of Emeline Williams, m. Nov 18, 1875.
Richard Heberling Called; Was 90 Years Old; Last Rites Held Monday.
Richard Heberling, 90, Princeville's oldest business man both in age and number of years in business here, passed away at Seven Oaks sanitarium Saturday morning, February 29, following injuries received in a fall at his home about twp weeks previously.
For a short time following the accident, Mr. Heberling seemed to be on the road to recovery, but his advanced age was too great to withstand the injuries and shock, and he grew gradually weaker until the end, which came very peacefully early Saturday morning.
Richard Heberling, one of the pioneer residents and business men of Princeville, was born on a farm near Lancaster, Ohio, March 20, 1845, and passed away at the Seven Oak sanitarium in Princeville, Illinois February 29, 1936. He was the son of John A. and Rebecca Van Meter Heberling. Had he lived until March 20 next he would have been 91 years old.
In 1858 he came to Peoria Illinois, to live with a sister, Sarah Selby and was educated in the Peoria schools. His first day spent in Princeville was on Christmas in 1860, when he rode a horse from Peoria to the Selby farm, located six miles west of town.
Soon after he came to Princeville to live on November 18, 1875, he was married to Emeline Williams in this village. An only child of this marriage, a son, Vaughn W., survives him. Mrs. Heberling passed away at Princeville on January 2, 1917.
With the exception of a short stay in the South and a few years spent away in California, his life since shortly after 1860 was spent in Princeville, where for almost fifty years he operated a restaurant. For the past 35 years his place of business has been in its present location. It was but recently that failing eyesight made it necessary for him to relinquish his own active part in the enterprise he established.
Mr. Heberling was the youngest of a family of eight children, all having preceded him in death. Those left to mourn his death are his son, and the following nieces and nephews: Mary Keller, Ohio; Mrs. A.D. Colwell, Peoria, Illinois; Mrs. Fannie Cox and Mrs. Daisy Timmons, Wyoming, Illinois; Clara Beatty and Laura Wickham, California; John Heberling, Davenport, Iowa; Will, George and Harry Syfert, Columbus, Ohio; and Mrs. Lulu Zang, Kewanee, Illinois.
Funeral services for Mr. Heberling were held at the Bullock funeral home in Princeville at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, in charge of A. B. Ryan, pastor of the Princeville Presbyterian church. Pallbearers were J. V. Christian, ?. S. Garrison, C. W. Fry, Oscar Graves, Hanford Harrison, and Frank Cutler. Interment was in Princeville cemetery.
