Met Jean Branch Maney while she was a student at Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, and he was stationed at nearby army base Fort Croft. They both attended the Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir. They married on Dec. 26, 1943, and on their first wedding anniversary he was killed in WWII. They had no children. She remarried in 1947 to George Riley Edwards, and the two of them devoted their lives to anti-war activism.
