Lovell Pioneer Dies Thursday
LOVELL -- Mrs. Adeline (Addie) Moncur Allen, 70, died at Evanston Jan. 27 of pneumonia. She had resided in Lovell for the past 65 years.
Ms. Allen was a retired retail clerk and a member of the LDS church.
She was born Jan. 12, 1896, in Mount Carmel, Utah, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Moncur.
Surviving are two brothers, Myron Moncur of Long Beach, Calif., and Joseph U. Moncur of Lovell.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday in the LDS chapel, with Bishop Scott Welch officiating. Interment will be in Lovell cemetery, under direction of Haskell Funeral Home.

Mrs. Allen was born Jan. 12, 1896, in Mt. Carmel, Utah, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Moncur.

The Singing Mothers sang "Through Deepening Trails" conducted by Kathlyn Welch and accompanied by Drew Shumway. The Invocation was given by Dee Cozzens and obituary by Florina Wollam. Mr. and Mrs. Scott Welch sang "I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked" accompanied by Joyce Welch. Wilmer Nicholls gave the sermon and the chorus sang "Peace, I Leave with You." The benediction was by Alma Brown and pall bearers were all nephews Doyle, Don, Dale and Brent Moncur, Gerry Roth and Dee Cozzens.
Burial was in the Lovell Cemetery under the direction of Haskell Funeral Home.
Adeline Moncur Allen, daughter of Robert B. and Nancy Caroline Jolley Moncur, was born Jan. 12, 1896 in Mt. Carmel, Utah. She came to Lovell in the year 1901 and lived here most of her life. She married Cecil Allen and lived in Worland for a few years but returned to Lovell where she was employed for some time. She also worked in Powell until ill health forced her to retire five years ago.
She passed away Jan. 27, 1966. Mrs. Allen is survived by her two brothers, Joseph U. Moncur of Lovell and Myron of Long Beach, Calif. and many nieces and nephews.
TRIBUTE
In the story of the early years of Adeline Moncur Allen, long-time Lovell resident who passed away last week lies more evidence of the invincible spirit of the pioneers who settled this area.
"Addie", as she was known to her many friends and relatives, came to Lovell by covered wagon at the age of five. The family, consisting of her parents, two sisters and six brothers, came from Mt. Carmel, Utah in 1901 bringing with them all of their worldly possessions, including livestock, which grazed along near the wagon. Pioneer mothers of that time mixed and baked their bread and churned their butter, as well as performing the many other duties of keeping a family of eleven clothed and fed on the long and tortuous trail.
After three months of traveling, they arrived in Lovell. Since it was September and winter close at hand, the men in the family quickly built a one-room log cabin and put up a tent in which to endure the elements. The weather became extremely cold and the family battled 40 below zero weather, the boys sleeping in the tent without any heat.
It was a bad winter. The entire family, with the exception of the mother had smallpox. She was spared, it seemed in order to care for the rest of the family and her neighbors. The nearest doctor was in Basin at that time and the closest phone in the small community of Garland.
But these hardy pioneers did survive and from such beginnings came our proud community as it is today. In every story of perseverance in the face of hardship and privation, wherever it may have taken place, we find the strong willed, faithful people who made America great.
