On December 14, 1893, Myrtle Manona Ballinger became his wife. Myrtle was born in Indiana and had come to Pawnee with her parents about the same time as William. The couple was blessed with two sons and one daughter.
In early December 1916, William stepped on a rusty nail that almost penetrated his entire foot. A physician was called who dressed the injured foot, and he was doing fine. Unfortunately, a week before his death, William began to feel ill, and symptoms of lockjaw developed. He was taken to the Larned hospital, where he received anti-tetanus serum. However, he grew steadily worse and passed away on December 16, 1916.
