Maxine enjoyed traveling, having visited more than 40 states with Verne. Following Verne's death, she continued to enjoy traveling with family members. Two of her favorite bus tour destinations were the New England Fall Foliage states and Nova Scotia, Canada.
Cooking, baking, and trying out new recipes were enjoyable to her until the strokes made it too difficult to continue. Entertaining family and friends on the farm were some of her special memories, and her homemade pies, cookies, noodles and cinnamon rolls were family favorites.
Maxine's love for flower and vegetable gardening was passed on to family members. Violets were one of her favorite flowers and the family cannot remember a time when she did not have violets in the home.
Maxine was a member of Mystic Circle Club of Formoso for 50 years, involved in EHU of Montrose, active member of Montrose Methodist Church, and a 10-year volunteer for Mankato Senior Center and Jewell County Thrift Store. She also enjoyed being a member of the Women's Aglow of Courtland.
Her dedication to the Lord was evident as she was well known for her generosity and willingness to help others in the community. She believed in the call of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ by supporting ministries and organizations that reached out to all.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband LaVerne Dempsey in 1989; daughter Connie Russell in 1998; granddaughter Darcy Dempsey-Schmidt in 2007, and three brothers: Ralph, Clarence and Kenneth.
Survivors include her son Wayne and wife Jo of Mankato, Kansas; two daughters: Linda and husband Richard Benson of McPherson, Kansas, and Janis and husband Carl Philo of Omaha, Nebraska; seven grandchildren: Richelle and Danielle Russell of McPherson, Kansas; John and wife Corrie Philo of Omaha, Nebraska; Heather Dempsey of Overland Park, Kansas; Nicole and husband Tony Broussard of Omaha, Nebraska; Shawna and husband Jeff Mathieson of Regina, Canada; Lance and wife Kim Benson of Meridian, Mississippi; and 6 great grandchildren.
