The mother of Seri Jane "Sarah" Girscher, was Katharina "Kate" Girscher, who was born in Zendersch, Mures, Romania. Seri Jane's, mother, Katharina, married a man by the name of Andreas Gross, of Romania. They were married 23 April 1899. They first child, a son, Georg Gross, born on 21 June 1900; followed by a daughter, Katharina Gross, named after her mother, born in 1902; who went on to marry a man by the name of Hans Sallmann.

Seri Jane's mother, wanting a better life for herself; left her homeland; immigrating to America in 1906; leaving her husband, Andreas Gross, and two young children, Georg & Katharina, in Romania. She settled in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Her second spouse was Michael Gierscher. Their daughter, Seri Jane "Sara" Girscher, was born on 27 November 1907, in Monaca, Beaver, Pennsylvania. Soon following by a little brother, Michael William "Bill" Girscher, born June 1909, in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. In a news article published in the Pittsburgh Press, it was stated in court that Michael Gierscher deserted his family in 1909. In the 1910 Census of Pittssburgh, ward 25, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, there appears a Kate Griesser, 33 years; Sarah, 2 years; Michael, 10 months, living in an orphanage. Seri Jane and her brother, Michael, did live in an orphanage; here, it would appear their mother was employed, to remain nearby. In the 1930 Census of Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, Catherine Gircher, 53 years; Sarah Gircher, 22 years; Jacob Piffer, boarder 28 years; with no indication of her brother Michael. Times were difficult for a single woman immigrating to America alone; soon having two children, to support. Seri Jane's, mother, Katharina, sent money and letters to her children, left behind in her homeland; always with the dream of bringing them to America, which never came to be.

Seri Jane (Girscher) Froehlich, stayed in touch with her mother's family in Romania, until she died 7 February 1967, in Paramount, Los Angeles, California. When Seri Jane, died, subsequent letters were returned unopened, without her family in Romania knowing of her death; all contact with the families was broken off. It was only after my first posting this memorial for Seri Jane, that her mother's family, who had lost all trace of her some 44 years ago, saw her memorial, half way around the world, where they are now living in Germany, and our families re-established new connections, with the next generation; thus obtaining the stories of Seri Jane's, childhood and finding the identity of her mother and family.

The family of Katharina "Kate" Gierscher, who came forward after all of these years has stated: "Katharina's ancestors were living in a German community in a part of Southern Europe that belonged to AUSTRIA-HUNGARY. After World War I, that area became part of Romania, and still is today. However, for us Germans, it became more and more difficult to live in that area, since it became a communmist country after the War. We had to struggle with depression and poverty. After the collapse of the communist regime in 1990, the majority of the settlers came to Germany, and that is where we live today."
