Susan Graceful Watkins was born in New Mexico and died in MT. She was one of 10 children born to William Henry Watkins and Rebecca C. Barnes Watkins.

A page from "the family Bible" clearly states that Susan's middle name was "Graceful".

Her siblings were: Cyreena, Franklin, Mattie, Myrtle, William, Mae (my husband's grandmother), Maggie (who died at age 13), Olive and Naomi (who died in 1937).

Susan was the wife of Louis Joseph Holmes. They had married at Belt, MT on December 24, 1912. Louis was the son of John W. Holmes and Elsie J. Black Holmes. Their marriage was "performed by a Minister of the Gospel (A. Hammer) of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the laws of Montana". Two witnesses were: Hazel Richardson and Eric Lindquist.

I have information on only four children born of this union: Elsie, Charles, Ethel Mae and John, however obit (below) clearly states another daughter (Evelyn).

Her obit (from the Great Falls Tribune, Great Falls, MT, Monday 14 September 1953 Page 9): BELT WOMAN DIES HERE; RITES PENDING. Mrs. Susan Grace Holmes, 61, Belt, died at a Great Falls hospital Sunday night after an illness of two weeks. She had been a resident of Belt for 54 years. Born Aug 12, 1892 (page from family Bible gives birth year as 1893) in New Mexico, Mrs. Holmes came to this area when she was 7 years old . Her husband died several years ago. Survivors include two sons: John of Armington and Charles of Missouri; three daughters: Mrs. Joe Mee (this is Ethel Mae) of Belt, Mrs. Earl Gierke (this is Elsie) of Great Falls and Mrs. Teal Harlemart (this is Evelyn) of Louisville, KY; two sisters: Mrs Mae Rowe of Santa Rosa, CA and Mrs. Olive Apperson of Aztec, NM; a brother, John Watkins of Hobson, nine grand-children and several nieces and nephews. The body is at Croxford's where funeral services will be announced.

*** Her funeral was held in the Belt Methodist Church at 2PM (this was posted in same newspaper as above on Tuesday 15 September 1953 Page 17) with the Rev Ellen Rose officiating. Burial will be in the Belt Cemetery.

*** Updated information received 9/26/16. Susan is the third person from the left in photo.

*** Six siblings are now listed on this memorial page (8/20/2021).
