He graduated from Altoona High School in 1914 and from Baker University in 1920. He graduated from Drew Theological Seminary in 1923. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Baker University in 1956. While a student at Baker University he was a minister of Monticello Church near Kansas City.
He was licensed in the Emporia District of the South Kansas Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. His first appointment, while still in high school, was to the Lafontaine Circuit south of Fredonia, Kansas. He began missionary work in Peru after 1923. He returned to the U.S. in January 1935. He was appointed to the Pleasanton Methodist Church in 1936. He became minister of the Herington Methodist Church in Baldwin, Kansas in 1942, Stafford Methodist Church in 1948 and First Methodist Church in Hays, Kansas in 1952.
He was appointed superintendent of the Independence District in 1956 and held that position for six years. He was appointed minister of the First Methodist Church in Fort Scott, Kansas in 1962. he retired in 1966 and moved to Topeka. He was chaplain at the United Methodist Home in Topeka until 1971.
