Doctor in Side Saddle

1854 - 1892 , Bradford County, Pennsylvania

I went into the Wyalusing Library to do some research and the very first magazine I picked up was a copy of "The Settler" May 1996 quarterly magazine of history and biography. On the title page was an article called "Doctor In Side Saddle" - and it was about the lady we were looking for! I had heard that Maria Minnis, sister of our William Minnis, was a doctor who lived in Bradford County, Pennsylvania. The article tells us the whole story "she began the study of medicine in Phelps with a Dr. Bannister. In 1850 she came to Pennsylvania and entered the office of her mother's cousin, Dr. Geroge F. Horton, in Terrytown to continue her studies....entered...Women's Medical College of Philadelphia....graduated ... in 1853...." It's a long interesting article and speaks of the sidesaddle found "among her effects."

The article ends with a part of her obituary: "For many years she was a practicing physician and was known so well throughout this part of the county that it is only necessary to say that her extended practice and success as a physician speak well for her. she was a loving wife and mother and a quiet and good neighbor, highly esteemed by those who knew her. She is buried in the Homet family cemetery at Homets Ferry." We later went to the cemetery where she is buried: a marvelous gray stone proclaims "Maria Minnis M.D." Near her is her mother as well as her husband and daughter Lucy.
