Frances Amelia Bowers was the daughter of John C. Bowers and Susanna Smathers. She married Robert E. Van Elsberg on November 27, 1882 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. They had 13 children.

Frances then married William Traves on November 18, 1919 in Pine County, Minnesota. They moved to Coos County, Oregon, where William died.

Frances married Gilbert Harvey Butterfield on November 10, 1924 in Coos County, Oregon. They divorced on February 23, 1927, also in Coos County.

Frances married Manuel Victor on January 9, 1930 in Laton, Fresno County, California. They subsequently divorced in 1931.
