Private Company "H" 5th New York Vet Infantry. Born in Massachusette, Benson enlisted as a private on February 23, 1865, at New York City, mustered into the 5th Veterans that same day, and mustered out on August 21 of year at Hart's Island, New York (site of the old Fort Slocum and now the current NYC Potter's field). In 1890, his application for an invalid pension was granted under certificate 634,939. His widow, Helen Benson, who is interred with him, received a pension in 1892 under certificate 353,655. He last lived at 62 Garden Street in Hoboken, New Jersey.
