Graduate of Auburn University, University of Chicago, University of Iowa (Ph.D.)Chemistry professor and department head, Baylor University, Waco, Texas. Discovered a new compound which had never been reported. First appeared in literature in his dissertation. Who's Who in America, beginning in 1952. American Men of Science, Sigma Xi, honorary fraternity for graduate scientists, full membership. Phi Lambda Upsilon, honorary fraternity for chemical students; American Chemical Society, member for fifty years; honored by Baylor University by creation of the Gooch-Stephens Lectureship in Chemistry; American Association for the Advancement of Science, Texas Academy of Sciences, charter member; American Association of University Professors; Woodmen of the World; One of first members of Waco, Texas Zoning and Planning Commission (1930s and 1940s); Deacon and chairman of board of deacons at First Baptist Church, Waco. Taught men's Sunday school class for over thirty-three years. Wrote music that was published in a hymnal; sang in a singing group and taught singing schools.
