Death at Sea on board Western Ocean
Robert arrived in Melbourne on ship Lorena, from Dublin, in 1853, aged 28 years
Marriage 1856 to Honora White (VIC BDM 3612/1856)
Robert Dunning, son of Robert and Hannah Dunning, was one of the few sailors who had enlisted in the Confederate States Navy, aboard the cruiser, CSS SHENANDOAH, in February, 1865, very shortly after that vessel had left Port Phillip Bay, and were known to have returned to Australia, at the end of her cruise.
Robert Dunning had been married in Melbourne, in November, 1856, to Honora White, but nothing more is known of his wife. At that time he was listed as a painter, and the couple were married according to the rites of the Catholic Church, at St. Francis Church, in Melbourne.
Nothing more is heard of Robert until he stowed away aboard the Confederate cruiser, on the last day of her stay at Melbourne in January and February of 1865, and then enlisted in her service, once the cruiser was outside of Australian waters. He remained with the vessel throughout the final months of her cruise, and until her surrender, to British authorities, at Liverpool, England, in November, 1865.
Dunning remained in Liverpool for only a very brief period before embarking aboard the vessel, WESTERN OCEAN, which sailed for Melbourne on December 7, 1865. However, Dunning was not able to make it back home, as he died, of Brights disease of the kidneys, aboard ship, on March 26, 1866, only two days before her arrival in the port of Melbourne. He was buried at the quarantine station cemetery at Queenscliff, Victoria.
