Parents: Samuel and Sarah Clouts/Clonts Dodson of Pulaski County, Virginia. Sarah was b. ca 1768 in Virginia.
Siblings: Joel, Claiborne, Samuel, Sallie, Ruth, William and Abner.

Sometime around 1805, John's family migrated to northwestern Tennessee and settled on Indian Creek in Grainger County. Around 1812-14, John married Mary Dalton in Tenn.

John traveled to Rutledge, TN in November of 1814 when he was mustered into service as a private under Captain Riches Company, Colonel Bayles Regiment and General Colter's Brigade to serve during the War of 1812. In April, 1815, John was discharged and returned home to Grainger County.

Most of John's and Mary's twenty years of marriage were spent on the farm in Grainger County with their family of ten children. But in 1830 they left Tennessee for Newton County, Missouri where Mary died sometime between 1833 and 1837. (Newton Co. wasn't formed until 1838; they must have gone to Barry Co., from which Newton Co. was formed.)

Meanwhile Hannah and her first husband Thomas J. Anderson were raising their five children in Warren County, Tennessee. In 1834 they moved to Washington County, Arkansas. Thomas died there in 1837. Although almost 100 miles separated John in Missouri and Hannah in Arkansas, they met and were married in Benton County, Arkansas on January 15, 1837. They settled in McDonald County, Missouri with the children from their previous marriages, although it is likely that John's four oldest children had already left home and begun families of their own. But with the 11 younger children and five more of their own, it must have been a busy household.

John, Hannah and their children trekked west on the Oregon Trail in 1852 to join Hannah's son Thomas F. Anderson who resided in the Deer Creek area of Douglas Co., Oregon Territory. Since their objective was Douglas County, they took the Applegate Trail from Ft. Hall (aka the Southern Route). They arrived in Douglas County on October 30, 1852. They likely spent that first winter with sons Thomas and Daniel in Deer Creek Township. They took up a Donation Land Claim in the Roberts Creek area.

On December 17, 1871, almost 20 years after their move to Oregon, John died at their homestead on Roberts Creek. He was 80-years-old and had lived to see the area transformed. At the time of his death, the Dodsons owned about 700 acres of good land consisting of their original Oregon Donation Land Claim, 160 acres John had claimed as a War of 1812 veteran, and 120 acres they had purchased in 1864. In his Will John left the estate to Hannah and $50-$100 to each of the children.

Hannah lived for another nine years. She died October 25, 1880 in Roseburg at the age of 73. The bulk of her estate went to sons John Jr. and Samuel.
