Ben Brackin met the widow, Gertrude Douglass Brown when Gertrude's family moved to the Hudson Township, Douglas County, Minnesota area. Ben left this area for Seattle where he secured a job as foreman for the Pacific Steam Ship Company . He found a place to live and wrote and asked Gertrude to be his bride. She consented and they were married in Seattle November 26, 1902.
They stayed in Washington for a couple years but by 1904 they returned to homestead and prove their claim in Max, North Dakota. After a few years, about 1910, they returned to Hudson Township, Douglas County Minnesota. Later they moved to Alexandria where they owned and operated the Brackin Motel. They also owned other property and rentals throughout the city.

Funeral services for Benton D. Brackin were held Saturday March 27, at 2 p.m. from the First Congregational Church Rev. Gary Bousmann officiated.
Cleo Dyer sang "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere", accompanied by Mrs. Donald Franzen.
Pallbearers were Joe Johnson, Stan Skinnemoen, Irving Sieling, Fred Lauerman, Cleve Olson and Dan Townsend.
Interment was made in the Kinkead Cemetery.
Benton D. Brackin was born at Ellsworth, Wisconsin January 24, 1886, the son of Aseneth and John Brackin. The Brackin family came to Forada, where they resided for 16 years, and then moved to Fairmount, North Dakota.
Mr. Brackin went to Seattle, Washington in 1901. Here he was united in marriage to Gertrude Florence Douglass on November 23, 1902. After residing in Seattle for two years, Mr. and Mrs. Brackin came to Alexandria where they have made their residence for the past 50 years with the exception of one year when they made their residence at Velva, North Dakota.
For many years Mr. Brackin operated the Cabin Camp at the junction of Highways 52 and 29. He retired a few years ago and has spent much of his leisure time traveling. He had been in ill health for some time and was taken to the Our Lady of Mercy Hospital on January 12, where he passed away Monday, March 22, at the age of 74 years, 1 month, 28 days.
Surviving are his wife, one daughter, (Pearl) Mrs. Roy Glover of Yakima, Washington; and one granddaughter, (Dalphine) Mrs. Russell Dyer, and three great grandchildren.
Also surviving are three brothers, Frank
Brackin of Hankinson, N. D., Claud Brackin of Bemidji and Ralph Brackin of Wahpeton, N. D. and one sister, Mrs. Myrtle Trapp of Fargo, N. D . He was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Margaret Rising, and one brother, John.
