Mrs. S.T. Andrews Found Dead In Barn
Suicide Follows Nervous Breakdown - Was Prominent In W. C. T. U. Work
The body of Mrs. S. T. Andrews was found hanging to a rafter in the barn at her home, 1111 Congress Street, about 4:30 o'clock, Saturday afternoon by relatives who had been searching for her. She was dead when found. Mrs. Andrews had been suffering from a nervous breakdown for about a year and the suicide was committed when she was in a state of dementia.
Since Mrs. Andrews's breakdown the family had kept a careful watch over her, but Saturday afternoon she went into the barn, procured a chain and hanged herself.
Dr. D. L. Morgan, county coroner, was called to the Andrews home. "It was a plain case of suicide," said Dr. Morgan this morning.
Della Wegley Andrews was born in Page County Iowa, July 26, 1875. She came to Kansas with her parents in 1879 and was married to S. T. Andrews June 15, 1897. Mr. and Mrs Andrews had lived in Emporia since 1899, except during 1902 and 1903, when they lived in Kansas City, Mo.
Mrs. Andrews was an active member of the W. C. T. U. in Lyon County for many years. She joined the organization when a girl and held many offices during her membership. Last year Mrs. Andrews was president of the Lyon County union and superintendent of several departments. She also was head of the publicity section of the union. When a girl, Mrs. Andrews attended the Neosho Rapids school and later attended the Normal. While in school she studied elocution, and gave readings at many home talent plays. After finishing her work at the Normal she taught school for six years in Lyon County, having taught at District 102, Fairview and at the Section Schoolhouse.
Mrs. Andrews had been a member of the Presbyterian Church since early childhood, and for three years she taught in the young woman's class at the Arundel Avenue Presbyterian Church. Recently Mrs. Andrews withdrew her membership from the Presbytierian Church and joined the Free Methodist Church. She had planned to teach a class in the Sunday School at that church, but her health failed and she was unable to teach.
Mrs. Andrews is survived by her husband, Sherman T. Andrews, and five children: Donald, Julia, Ruth, Austin and Elizabeth; her mother, Mrs. N. A. Wegley; three brothers, A. E. Wegley and Fred Wegley, of Emporia; J. E. Wegley, of Wichita; three sisters, Mrs. M. C. Reeve, of University Park, Iowa; Mrs. P. C. Funk, of Hugoton, and Mrs. W. Roy Bradley, of Camp Grant, Ill., all of whom are in Emporia.
Funeral services will be held at the Andrews home this afternoon at 3:00 o'clock. Rev. W. C. Templeton, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Winfield, assisted by Rev. J. P. Dowd, of the Free Methidist Church, of Emporia, will conduct the services. Interment will be made in Maplewood Cemetery.
