WORCESTER Rita L. (Demers) Bern, 87, a devoted mother, grandmother and caregiver, formerly of 9 Dillon St. passed away peacefully Wednesday March 2nd surrounded by family in the Christopher House Nursing and rehabilitation center.

Her husband Marvin L. Bern Sr. passed away in 1994. Rita is survived by a son Marvin L. "Skip" Bern Jr. and his wife Brenda A. (Valery) Bern; two daughters, Barbara A. Powers and Claire M. and her husband Paul F. Cantiani Sr. all of Worcester; 5 grandchildren, Karen Wallman, Cheryl Cantiani-Williams, James E. III and Timothy Powers, and Paul F. Cantiani Jr.; a great grandson Collin Williams Jr;; many dear friends who loved her and will miss her greatly. A brother, Leslie Demers and a sister, Buelah Phelan predeceased her. Born in Worcester she was a daughter of Wilfred and Belle (Supernault) Demers, she graduated from Shrewsbury High School at age 16, ahead of her peers, and has lived in Worcester most of her life.

Rita worked many years as bookkeeper for Merrill & Usher Steel Company before retiring in 1979. She was a member of St Stephen's Church, an enthusiastic traveler who visited many locations around the world.

Rita's funeral will be held Saturday March 5th from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME and CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. with a Mass at 10 am in St Stephen's Church, 357 Grafton St. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends and family may pay their respects from 5 to 8 pm Friday, March 4th in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Christopher House, 10 Mary Scano Dr. 01604 or the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, 8 Oak St., Worcester 01609.
