Ned was a proud Irishman, World War II veteran, St. Louis Historian, and an avid Cardinals baseball fan. Dearest husband of the late Dorothy (nee Todd), dear father of Marjie (Tom) Mader and Jennifer (Tom) Buchholz. Dear grandfather of Anne (Gwenal) Chiffoleau, Katie (Blake) Mills, Thomas Mader Jr. and Kerry (Matt) Vitou. Loving Gee Gee Pa of Louis and Baby Girl Chiffoleau. Dear brother of the late Rosemary (the late Tom) Gambon. Dear brother-in-law of Phyllis (David) Boyer and Gail (the late Jack) Todd. Dear uncle of Dr. Tom (Pamela) Gambon and Rob Gambon. Great uncle to Elena and Tommy Gambon. Loving son of the late Robert X. Gardner and Margaret Kelly Gardner. Dear cousin and friend to many. A special thanks to the sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George and the entire staff at Mother of Good Counsel Home for their compassionate and loving care for our father. Ned was a 1941 graduate of Southside Catholic High School (St. Mary's). In the Army, he was a member of 349th Troop Carrier Group Association (312 TC Squadron), Telephone Pioneers, and long time member of the St. Louis Jazz Club. He loved to play chess, golf, clarinet and music from the golden age of Jazz. Ned traveled throughout the world during the Second World War, including Europe, Africa, South and Central America. He was trained in telegraph and teletype repair and operation, Morse Code and cryptography at the Central Signal Corps School at Camp Crowder, Missouri. After the war, he worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for 38 years where he retired as Chief Switchman. He earned a certificate in Business Administration from Washington University.
