According to Aileen Trent, Jesse was born on the farm south of Granby and South Star. She says he was of Irish descent. Jesse attended Hazel Green school which had split log benches. F. H. Dickson was the minister when he married Mary Caroline Barnett and she was 17 years old at that time.

According to his obituary, Jesse died at the family home. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Church of Christ for many years and was interested in promotion of gospel singing and led groups in various parts of the area. The day before he died he expressed a desire to lead the song service at the midweek service the following day, his birthday, at the church.

According to Aileen Trent: "After Mary's death, Jesse married Martha Ann Kerr. The minister at her wedding to Jesse was Ruffus Green. Martha was born in Lawrence County but moved to Newton County at the age of 13."
