Gladys Marie Barfield, "DeDe" met her Heavenly Father and joined her beloved husband, Bob, on October 18, 2009. Gladys was born in Baytown, Texas on March 21, 1927 and was a life-long Baytonian. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she and Bob were baptized together in 1948. She retired from Goose Creek Independent School District in 1979 after 35 years of service as secretary at Horace Mann Junior School. Retirement gave her unlimited time for one of her favorite pastimes, bridge. Gladys played bridge with the duplicate bridge club at Baytown Community Center and the bridge club at Highlands Community Center for many years. During her four year battle with cancer, she rarely missed a game of bridge. She was always the first to tell you that her greatest blessing in life was her family. Her three granddaughters, Lindsey, Sara and Lauren were the joy of her life. She was an inspiration of strength, hope and dignity to all who knew her. The life-lessons she taught her daughters and granddaughters will be passed on for many generations. Her favorite color was red, which completely described her strength and passion for life. Her family will honor her by wearing red to her service and asks all of her friends to participate.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mattie Milner, husband, Bob Barfield, and brother, Willis Milner. Gladys is survived by daughter and son-in-law Debbie and Greg DeLuca, daughter and son-in-law Cindy and B.J. Shelton, granddaughter and grandson-in-law Lindsey and Ashley Sharp, granddaughters Sara Shelton and Lauren DeLuca, brother-in-law Kenneth Barefield, niece Sharon Milner and nephews Ronnie Milner and Roy Barefield. Our family would like to thank two very special ladies, Melissa Crowley and Billie Smith, for their care and devotion to our mother. We would also like to thank Dr. Kim Bloom and Dr. Edward Leahey for their 20 plus years of personal care and support.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 20, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Navarre Funeral Home with funeral services following on Wednesday, October 21 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Navarre Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 2444 Rollingbrook Drive, Baytown, Texas 77521, (281) 422-8111
