Maria was born as Maria Lucie Louise Schultz in Dömitz, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. Her parents were Joachim Christian Peter Heinrich Schultz and Sophie Friederike Elisabeth Eggert. She married George Bruce in about 1855 in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. By 1870 the family was living in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, Iowa, and by 1880 they were in Wall Lake Township, Minnehaha County, South Dakota. They later moved to Hartford. Their children were: Amelia, George Henry, Sophia Marie, John C., Emma Sarah, Wiliam H., Robert H., and Mary Catherine "Mayme". Maria passed away at the home of her daughter, Mary "Mayme" Schaper.
