Birth: 1837
Death: Feb. 7, 1925

Pioneer St. Louis businesswoman and suffragette. Known as the "Queen of St. Louis Society," Lucy was the second daughter of Judge James Semple, later Senator Semple, of Illinois. She was married to millionaire Edgar Ames. Upon his death in 1867, she began managing his pork packing business as well as several other business ventures including the Lindell Hotel, a sugar refinery, a grain elevator, steamship lines, and insurance and banking firms. She became the president of the Ames Real Estate Company, and along with her son developed the Ames Place residential district in University City, Missouri. Placing high value on education and the rights of women, she became a member of the Equal Suffrage Society in 1869. (Some information for this biography was used with permission from the author of the book "Movers and Shakers, Scalawags and Suffragettes: Tales From Bellefontaine Cemetery" by Carol Ferring Shepley, published by the University of Missouri Press 2008.)
