Willis died as a result of a blow on the temple received in a fight with another boy after school. He made no complaint until 2am the next morning telling his mother that he was gettin lock-jaw. Evidently paralysis was setting in. It was probable that a blood clot formed on his brain. He died that same evening.

A group of boys were playing ball near the Episcopal church. A fist fight was started over some difficulty. The other boy piicked up a stone, closed his first over it and struck Willis in the temple.
