He was born as Jan Siemens Dijk in the Dutch northeastern province Groningen. His parents are Siemen Hendriks Dijk (1820-1872) and Trientje Jans Bouwsema (1829-1916).
On 4 November 1880 he married in Bedum, province Groningen, to the one year younger Fijlina van Dijken, who was born in Bedum.
In 1882 they got in Jan Dijk's birthtown Thesinge, municipality Ten Boer, a daughter, Trientje Dijk.
On 21 March 1904 farmer Jan Dijk (48 years aged) and his wife Fijlina (47) arrived with their seven sons, Pieter (22, farmer), Jan (17, farmer), Arend (14, farmer), Willem (12), Lambertus (9), Hendrik (7) and Harm Pieter (6) on the SS Potsdam at Ellis Island, New York. Their last residence place in the Netherlands was Thesinge and their destination is Fijlina's brother P. van Dijken in Gallatin Valley, in the southwestern part of Montana.
In November 1906 Jan Dijk is a farmer too.
In March 1909 his wife Füliena died in Montana, Gallatin County, Manhattan, and he remarried between July 1921 and April 1923 to the 47 years younger Anje (Anna, Anie) Evenhuis, who arrived on 22 July 1921 with her parents and siblings on the SS Rotterdam at New York, with as destination her maternal uncle C.
