Scientist, Virologist. Pioneering Polio Vaccine Developer. A virologist, he graduated in medicine in the 30s of the twentieth century at the University of Warsaw and moved to Brazil following the Nazi invasion of Poland and later in the United States where continued his studies and experiments for a vaccine against polio. He found out synthesis and experimented the first vaccination in humans in 1950 by testing the vaccine on a large scale in Africa. Koprowski served as director of the The Wistar Institute from 1957 to 1991 and was also President of Biotechnology Foundation Laboratories as well as Head of the Center for Neurovirology at Thomas Jefferson University. He received many honorary degrees and academic awards including an appointment as Alexander von Humboldt Professor at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Munich, San Marino Award for Medicine, Nicolaus Copernicus Medal of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Philadelphia Cancer Research Award, John Scott Award and Philadelphia Award. He was also a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia as well as a member of the National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences and New York Academy of Sciences. Koprowski wrote numerous scientific papers and was co-editor of several journals. However during his career, following the checks carried out by several researchers, he was considered the involuntary responsible for the first appearance of the human HIV virus, due to the suministración of the vaccine in over one million people between 1957 and 1958 in the Belgian Congo. He died because of pneumonia at age of ninety-six.
