Bennie was a Radio Operator for Troop E, 6th Cavalry, United States Army stationed at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. While on training maneuvers near Chattanooga, Tennessee, Bennie was assigned the duty of motorcycle courier. He lost control of the motorcycle and died in the accident.
Bennie was 19 years old and the son of Grover Lane Burgess and Effie C. O'Dell. He had four other brothers that served during World War II: Cecil and Leroy in the United States Army, Woodrow in the United States Army Air Forces and David in the United States Navy.
