Joseph was born to a wealthy family in North Carolina with a long lineage in America. In ascending order they are:

Henry Baker (1776 NC - 1860 NC)
Henry Baker (1750 VA - 1823 NC)
Joseph Baker (1710 VA - 1787 NC)
James Baker (abt 1680 VA - 1754 VA)
Joseph Baker (abt 1650 England -
1728 VA)

Unlike any of his other siblings, Joseph left North Carolina and headed west shortly after he was widowed. He stayed in Arkansas for a time where he remarried, and then moved to Lamar County, receiving a 2nd class land patent there in February 1846, granted by the Republic of Texas just before it joined the United States. He was widowed again and then married for a third time to widow Sophronia Spencer. Joseph was one of the first Justices of the Peace in Lamar County and witnessed many of the original land grants.

Joseph had three sons and a daughter by his first wife whom he married in North Carolina. None of their names are known except for his oldest son, Henry Perry Baker, named after Joseph's father Henry and Joseph's mother's maiden name of Perry. Henry followed his father to Texas and married Nancy Cornelison in Lamar County before moving south.

Joseph's second wife's name is also unknown though she was from Georgia. They had four children also, one daughter, E. Baker, and three sons, Joseph Lafayette, Robert Perry, and Jonathan Calhoun Clay Baker.

Joseph had no children by Sophronia Spencer.
