Peter Martin deCheubel was born September 25, 1828 in Créfeld (Krefeld), Germany, and died March 14, 1911 in Howard County, Maryland. He studied for the priesthood while living in France. In 1851, at the age of twenty-three, he came to the United States. Upon his arrival, he became an interpreter, for the United States, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York city. He held that position for nine years. He could read and write in seven languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, and Lithuanian). In 1864, he enlisted in the Union Army and served around the Frederick, Maryland area before traveling South into the Richmond/Petersburg, Virginia area during the final months of the Civil War. He mustered out of the service in Richmond, Virginia on June 30, 1865. He married Josephine Greenwood April 19, 1881 in Baltimore, Maryland. She was born 1848, and died October 15, 1930 in Howard County, Maryland.
