Graveside services were held at Summit View Cemetery, Wednesday January 31 2001 for Nellie Ferree Feary, 97, of Guthrie, Oklahoma. Dr Dennis Clark, paster of the First Christian Church officiated. Nellie was born in Las Animas, Colorado on February 12 1903 to Philip and Theodosia (Bowman) Ferree. She was the youngest of eight siblings. Nellie attended Matheson, Colorado area schools and graduated from the 8th grade in 1919 from Columbine School. She went to Guthrie, Oklahoma via Buhl, Idaho in 1921. Nellie was working in a cafe as a waitress when she met the man that she would marry, Mr James Grover Feary, a local fireman, on October 5 1921 in Newkirk, Oklahoma at the County Courthouse. She was an eighty year resident of Guthrie, Oklahoma. For much of her life, Nellie was a nurse. She gave nearly 70 years of service to the American Red Cross and held two Clara Barton Awards for outstanding volunteer leadership. She also worked at home as a Marcellar. Mrs Feary was a former member of Business and Professional Women and served as a delegate to their national convention in Denver, Colorado in 1976. She was a member of the Domestic Science Club from 1927 until its disbandment in the mid-1990's. She was a life long Methodist. Having a cheerful and adventurous spirit, Nellie was a competent swimmer and diver, and in her youth an accomplished ice skater, skier and horsewoman. With her husband, she was one of the first non-rangers to explore Carlsbad Caverns in the early 1920's. Nellie later made two tours of the caverns, the last in 1988 at the age of 85. She was also an enthusiastic motorcyclist and remained a dedicated football fan until the end of her life. One of her hobbies was memorizing the statistics on all the NFL quarterbacks. Nellie loved to sew, and her home was filled with the results of her crocheting, tatting, knitting and embroidering talents. She died at the 89er Guest House Saturday evening, January 27 2001 peacefully in her sleep -a fitting end to a long, happy and successful life. Except for one daughter, Roberta J Feary, she left no close relatives. Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, Grover, in 1960; both of her parents; five brothers, Clark, Arthur, Harris, Oscar and Vern Ferree; and two sisters, Iva and Mary Ferree. Visitation for friends was Tuesday January 30 and Wednesday January 31 2001, 8:30am until 1pm at the Smith Funeral Home in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Smith Funeral Home handled arrangements.
