He lived through the great depression on his family's farm to Idaho and completed the 10th grade of where high school before he had to help the family by working.
During WWII he met Katherine McDougall from Ducktown, TN. They were married October 17, 1943. They moved to Jacksonville, FL where Harold built Liberty Ships for the war. During this time their first child, Jane, was born. After the war they moved to Mount Holly, NC and raised five children. In addition to Jane they had a son, Ron, and daughters Patty, Cathy, and Marsha.
Harold owned his own construction company and built many homes around Mount Holly. In 1960 Harold and his family moved west to Idaho where he worked on Minute Man missile silos.
