Vandergriff Donald Lee Vandergriff, 82, of Hixson, died Tuesday, May 13, 2003, after an extended illness. A lifelong Hixson resident, Mr. Vandergriff was a decorated veteran of World War II and the Korean War and retired from the U.S. Air Force after 26 years. Mr. Vandergriff was a member of Hixson United Methodist Church. He also was Hixson precinct chairman of the Democratic Party for 32 years, district commander of the American Legion, Hixson Post 159, past president Air Force Sergeants Association #478, member of the Ernie Pyle Chapter of 1945 Military Order of the Purple Heart and a member of the retired Enlisted Association #103. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Hettie Hixson Vandergriff; and maternal grandparents, John and Easter Hixson. Survivors are his wife of 62 years, Beryl Stultz Vandergriff; son, Donald Lee Vandergriff Jr., and daughterin-law, Evonne, of Hixson; son, Lynn Hixson Vandergriff, and daughter-inlaw, Marsha; granddaughters, Amanda and Cristy of Franklin, Tenn.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Hixson Family Cemetery, 5302 Old Hixson Pike, in Hixson, with Dr. John Bacon and Mark Davis officiating.
