Enlisted July 22, 1861 in 21st Georgia Infantry, Co E (new or second Co E) which consisted of men from Forsyth and Dawson counties. Called Concord Rangers (Mustered in at Concord Baptist Church). Originally known as Captain Smiths' Co, Independent Regiment, Wise's Legion. It was formed of men transferred from Capt Jesse Burtz's Co, The Cherokee Georgia Mountaineers, which was divided by Spec Order #163 dated Sept 26, 1861. It afterwards became Co D, 2nd Battalion, North Carolina Infantry. This is the unit under which John Gentry was serving near Richmond VA upon his death on Jan 23, 1862. Cause of death not known.
