Maria (Gertje) Appelhans, born June 18, 1926, died February 24, 2013. She was born in Rothammel in the Volga Region of Russia to Maria (Frank) and Pius Gertje. She was the oldest of six children, all but the youngest having predeceased her. She was married to Jakob Appelhans (deceased) of Minsk, Russia on August 23, 1946 in Harsewinkel, Germany. She immigrated to the United States with her husband and two sons, Reinhold and Josef (deceased) in 1955, where she united once again with her parents and brothers and sister.
Maria dedicated her life to working at Keebler Company, taking care of her family and taking care of her elderly parents, and her husband when he became ill. She enjoyed the company of all of her many relatives here in Colorado and also the frequent visits from relatives from Germany. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren, Alex, Amanda, Erich, Dana and Tammy, but she especially loved visiting with her great-grandchildren, Allison, Jakob, Sebastian, Sabrina, Charles and Samantha.
Besides her family, Maria enjoyed trips to Blackhawk to do a little gambling and actually winning a little money every now and then, which she shared with her children and grandchildren. That is just the type of person she was.
Maria was a good listener and never gave unsolicited advice. She was a good mother to her two sons and was proud of them no matter what scrapes they got themselves into. She will be fondly and lovingly remembered by all that knew her.
