Horace E. Allen was a private in the First Battalion, 356th Infantry, 89th Division of the U.S. Army under the command of Captain Frank Smith. He was deployed in France and his battalion was part of The Meuse-Argonne Offensive which was the significant battle fought in the Meuse valley during the first two weeks of November 1918 culminating with the signing of the Armistice on November 11th. Five days before the treaty, November 6, Horace E. Allen was severely wounded while trying to take the bridge leading across the river Meuse into the village of Pouilly. He died the next day of his wounds and was buried in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, Romagne, France.
