William T Bright was born in Delaware, likely in Murderkill Hundred in Kent, on Oct. 28, 1794, the son of Elcana Bright and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Thomas Bright, also of Delaware. The family and other friends moved west and by 1800 were living in Dunkard, Greene Co., Pennsylvania. By 1812, he was living in Monongalia Co, Virginia (later West Virginia) where he purchased 100 acres of land from a family friend, John Rhodes. About 1819 he married Keziah Thorn and their daughter, Julianne Elizabeth was born in Pennsylvania. They moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia as well as the borders were changing.
In 1835, his father died and left him more land that he had received from John and Catherine Rhodes. Before 1850, he and Keziah were divorced.
In 1853, he married Alcinda Fetty (widow Eastburn) by D W Roberts, though the court record of the marriage is dated May 5, 1858. They had two children, another Julia Ann Elizabeth (b. 1862)and William McClellen Elcana (b.1865). In May of 1868, he wrote a letter to his brother, Lorenzo Dow Bright, telling him that his wife "Lucinda" has died of TB.
In 1868, William is old and not well and has two young children. He marries Mariah White, who is already carrying a child by another man, likely with an agreement. William died Dec 16, 1870 and in his will specifies that his deceased wife, Lucinda Fetty's father, Thomas Fetty, be appointed guardian for his two children.
He was buried in the Bright Family Cemetery, outside of Morgantown, 1/2 mi. E. from Osage on Rt. 7 to R.R. shops; thence S. to Miller Hill. The Cemetery lay 1/4 mi. S. W. on ridge, but it no longer exists and that area is a parking lot for a retail store.
By law, graves, or at least the stones, are to be moved, but his granite stone has not been found in the county cemetery which should have been the repository for it. Note the information with the photograph.
This, therefore, serves as his memorial.
