Major League Baseball Player. A native of Cartersville, Georgia, he joined the Chicago Cubs in 1941, where he played in the outfield because of his strength as a batter. He was known for yelling, "Yetta boy, kid," from the opening pitch until the last man was out. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps the day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and served as a Sergeant in the 3704th Army Air Force Base Unit, stationed in San Marcos, Texas. He was honorably discharged at Maxwell Field, Alabama, on December 10, 1945. After the war, he returned to the field, playing baseball in throughout the United States and Cuba.
