Clardy Youth Dies in Shotgun Mishap

The tragic shotgun death of a 15-year-old Clardy youth, Tommy Anderson, was blamed indirectly on the freezing weather here Sunday morning.

Anderson was fatally wounded by his own shotgun as he tightened a scarf on the head of a hunting companion.

The youth was struck in the left side by one blast from his .20 gauge shotgun, and was dead on arrival at a Paris hospital.

Sheriff Dan Bills said young Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Anderson of Clardy community near Pattonville, had left his home to go hunting with a brother-in-law, Johnny Stout, shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday.

They walked down the road, Bills said, and had gone some 200 yards from the house when both decided their head scarves needed tightening to keep out the chilling wind. Stout tightened the scarf on Anderson's head. Then the youngster leaned his shotgun against his side and attempted to tighten Stout's scarf.

The gun accidentally discharged. The blast struck him in the left side and ranged into the heart.

The boy's father and a neighbor, Silas Clement, rushed him to a Paris hospital in a pickup but he was dead on arrival.

The victim was a sophomore at East Lamar High School and was a member of the basketball squad. The school was closed Monday as a result of the student's death.

Funeral services were planned at 3 p.m. Monday by Grant Funeral Home in Deport, at Bethel Baptist Church in Clardy. The pastor, the Rev. Myron Dillow, and the Rev. C. G. Renfro of Deport were to conduct the funeral. Burial was to be in Highland Cemetery.

Besides his parents, the youth is survived by five sisters, Mrs. Marlin McDowra, Barbara Anderson, Sandra Anderson, and Pamela Anderson, all of Clardy, and Mrs. Reva Stout of Paris, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R. T. (Pick) Anderson and Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Hignight of Deport vicinity.

Named as pallbearers for the funeral were Cecil Anderson, Morris Short, David Swindell, Bobby Clement, Norris Ballard, Gary Stone, Johnny Hatcher and Charles Kennedy.
