Lillie Pearl, a local girl, of whom grew into a generous hearted woman. She married a young man, Jim Gilmore, whose family had moved into town from Alabama in 1944, and they had gotten to know each other as teenagers. First though, Jim joined the Navy at the end of WW II and then he entered the Army & was sent to Korea. From there, he came back, settled down and took her for his bride. She became a devoted wife and mother, who was always at home, available for her children & also for many, many foster children. A beloved grandmother of five grandchildren, a close sister with her siblings and good friend to her neighbors.

Known by family, friends & many of the locals for her open door & a cup of coffee, no matter what the time, day or evening. She also played a significant role in her husband getting his weekly load of paperwork done & phone calls being kept up with pertaining to his insurance route. A member of the Ladies Auxiliary and a member of The First Baptist Church of Laurel Hill.

Biggest passions were Saturday Night Wrestling on tv, soap operas, Harlequin Romance books, Canasta & going fishing. What a combination... but that was Lillie Pearl.

On favorite foods, three that come to mind, was her love of sliced tomato & mayonaise sandwiches in the summertime and a love of steamed shrimp on New Years Eve. Another was of her being my biggest fan of my Christmas Rum cakes. The cakes were so moist, they wouldn't absorb the rum glaze very well, and it would "puddle" around the base of the cake. But, that was just dandy for Lilly Pearl. She'd take a piece of her cake and "sop up" the glaze like gravy on a bisquit and then giggle as she ate it. That became standard fare on the table every Christmas & New Years for her & for the family later on.

Daughter of William Marshall Johnson & Beulah Mae Graves and wife of Jim Gilmore, the local & successful, Independent Life Insurance Agent. All interred at Almarante also.

This was my mother-n-law.
