In the Philippine Islands, Joe fought to slow the Japanese conquest of the Philippines. He became a Prisoner of War on April 9, 1942, and was held as a POW at Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan.
In October 1944, he boarded the Arisan Maru. The evening of October 24th, the ship was it by two torpedoes from an American submarine. Although most of the POWs survived the attack, the Japanese refused to rescue them. He lost his life in the South China Sea.
