Discharged from military service in San Francisco in 1946, Berta married John B. Averett of Louisiana in 1947. Following the birth of their son, John Charles, in 1948, John B. returned to the Air Force as a reserve officer during the Korean War and continued his service until retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1967. Returning to Northern California upon retirement, John and Berta were long time residents of San Rafael. Berta moved to Houston in 2000 following the death of her husband of 52 years.
