Jean Nicolas "Nicolas" Erman was the eldest son of François/Francis Erman (b. 10 Oct 1779 Boulay Moselle, Lorraine FRA, d. 13 Feb 1865 Muskingum Co. OH) and Marie Anne Perin/Perrin (b. 6 Oct 1769 Elvange, Moselle, Lorraine, d. 9 Mar 1854 Muskingum Co. OH). Nicolas was a tonnelier by profession (i.e. a cooper who specialized in making barrels). On 26 Jan 1830 in Thicourt, Moselle, Lorraine he m. dressmaker Catherine Henriette Hilaire (b. 12 Dec. 1799 FRA, d. 29 Jul 1887, Coshocton Co. OH). In 1838 he moved to OH with wife and children, buying a parcel of land next to his parents' farm in Muskingum Co. Nicolas Royer, a close friend, came over in 1844 and in 1850-51 the two Nicolases moved their families to Coschocton Co. OH. They helped establish the original St. Nicholas church in Franklin Twp., on land where Anne Royer's Chapel later stood. In 2002 vandals burned down the little chapel and damaged a number of grave markers. A similar chapel has since been rebuilt on the site with donations from descendants of the pioneers buried in the cemetery.
