Gertrude was born to Henry R. and Clarissa R. Heldman. She was reared in Colorado and was the valedictorian of her graduating class in Craig, CO in 1924. She married Elmer H. Abbett on April 1, 1930 and they moved to Elko on July 1, 1933 where he was a road master for the Southern Pacific Railroad. They divorced in 1941. She was elected to the office of Elko County Treasurer in 1946 until her retirement on January 1, 1971.
