Dickin Medal Recipient. A horse in the Mounted Branch of the Metropolitan Police force, Upstart and his Police Constable rider were patrolling the Bethnal Green area in August 1944. During the course of their rounds, a V1 rocket fell between Bethnal Green and Shoreditch, less that 70 yards from the pair, showering them with broken glass and debris. According to his citation, "Upstart was completely unperturbed and remained quietly on duty with his rider controlling traffic, etc. until the incident had been dealt with." His exemplary behavior earned him a nomination for the Dickin Medal, commonly called the animal VC. On behalf of the 186 horses of the Mounted Branch of the Met, he and two other police horses, received medals on April 11, 1947. He remains one of only three horses to have earned the award. Upon his death, he was interred at the Mounted Branch Training Centre at Imber Court in Thames Ditton which also houses a small museum documenting the development of Mounted Police and where his Dickin medal is on display.
