Birth: Jan. 19, 1719
Death: Dec. 12, 1804

Engraver and publisher. At the age of twenty-one he became an engraver's apprentice in London, and once he became an engraver in his own right he set himself up as a printseller, producing volumes of English and Welsh vistas in 1746.He secured the best artists, such as Stothard and Opie, and the business was very successful. He produced an illustrated volume of Shakespeare's works and opened his own Shakespeare Gallery, which he was forced to sell after losing a fortune during the French Revolution. He also served as an Alderman, and in 1790 was Lord Mayor of London. Huelin (1996) relates an anecdote of Boydell's daily morning walks from his home at Cheapside to his parish church of St Olave Jewry, so that he could sluice his head under the waterpump.
