The second child of James William Johnson and Sarah Jane Anderson-Johnson, Murray was actually born in his family's home, outside of De Queen, AR, at a community called Ultima Thule.

He served in the Army during WWI, perhaps as early as 1916 and as late as 1919. After the War, Murray worked as a farmer, cattleman, lumberman, and drayman.

On 15 Oct 1926, Murray married Carrie Maxine Laster in a civil ceremony at Eagletown, OK.

They had the following children: Kenneth Murray, Beatrice Allene, Gloria Marie, John Allen, James Richard, Sarah Jane, Patricia Lorene, Kathryn Virginia and Betty Sue.

Carrie died on 5 Apr 1946 in De Queen, AR and Murray died on 6 Sep 1955 in Little Rock, AR.
